See, I never had a problem with Pionus, I just struggle with the second half of Poicephalus.. :) Though I was pronouncing it correctly!

Not a dirty one, but what about Aracari? I've here Ara-car-ee, Ar-a-sorry and Air-a-sehr-ee. I think the third one is correct but what do you all think?

The proper pronunciation for aracari came up in the rhamphastid group at one time. IIRC it was the second one you posted, or very close to it. So, something like A-ra-suhry.

For the record, I deliberately mispronounce a few bird name because I'm very 'visual' when it comes to pronunciation, and also mispronounce words due to my heritage. I tend to say caique as 'cake,' Pionus as 'pie-O-nis,' Poicephalus as 'poi-KE-fa-lis,' aracari as 'a-ra-KA-ri' with four syllables. Because of my background I also pronounce cephalopod as 'KEF-a-lo-pod' not with a s. I will not mispronounce these terms in the presence of other people who are knowledgeable in aviculture, ornithology, biology, etc., otherwise one runs the risk of appearing a bit odd... :o: :p :D

:rofl::rofl: I'm from the south too , and yea I get that all the time too. Too many syllables on every thing I say :rofl:
That's very interesting. Every time I hear people speaking in a southern accent, it sounds to me like there's less syllables. Are there big differences between the various southern accents?

OMG... LOL at some of the wacky pronounciations of pionus!

that one was hard to find not sure if this is right

"Pie-oh-sif-AH-lus"

I believe that it's pronounced with four syllables, not five:

Poi-ceph-a-lus

I've always heard the first syllable ("poi") pronounced as "pah".
