Tango loves to sit on his perch, which I believe is a wooden perch which is covered in seashells. Buy ssinc this morning, Tango has been thinking it's a great idea to chew the shells and I *think*, eat them. IvrI taken the perch out.

Just a quick question, but are seashells safe for ingestion

Yikes! That sounds scary to me. Wait for someone who knows the answer though.

I don't know the answer definitively, but seashells can be very sharp and shatter, so I can't imagine it would be a good thing...

seashells are made up mostly of calcium carbonate

Seashells are the exoskeletons of mollusks such as snails, clams, oysters and many others. These shells have three distinct layers and are consist mostly of calcium carbonate with about 2% protein. Crushed oyster shell was used as a source of calcium for a lot of animals. But nowadays there are liquid calcium sources available.

Seashells are not harmful to parrots, even if they are ingesting parts. I wouldn't allow them to eat an unending supply. Many people do become concerned with the sharpness, yes they can be sharp. I would also be concerned with them being clean. I soak mine in disinfectant over night and scrub them with a brush. How are these shells attached to the perch?
