I just bought a young Sun Conure a few days ago. When I bought him/her he/she was not puffed up. After a little while, I noticed that he/she was puffing up. My conure is not puffed up all the time, just a certain times. I've read that birds puff up sometimes when they are showing emotion, such as being scared, or being happy or content. Nothing seems to be wrong with my conure. He/she eats regularly, drinks regularly, and seems to be having normal bowel movements. Should I be worried, or is my bird just showing emotion?

Can you pinpoint when he is fluffy? My birds are fluffy if they are cold, content, or sleepy.

It most likely means that he/she is comfortable in your home and napping. If he/she is puffed all the time, it's a sign of illness. Any new bird should be checked over by a veterinarian and have some baseline blood and other testing done. Your vet will also discuss general care and make some recommendations, especially if this is your first bird. Make sure you see an avian vet, or at least a vet that is very experienced with birds. If it's your only bird, they probably won't recommend disease testing, but will recommend a CBC (complete blood count), they'll get a weight and do an exam and they'll do gram stains or cultures of the crop and vent.

Well, my Pepe is not puffed up anymore. I think I have isolated it to when he is being hand-fed some food or being petted. I think it's a happy poof!
