How did you smash them?
I tried a nut cracker and it didn't work. The outside was too slippery and it went flying!

Saroj, thank you so much for this photo-story! I LOVED it!!

I just want to explain that the nut in the first two photos of Rudy is a type of Canary Island Date Palm nut -- a very large species that is comparable to a Medjool Date. Currently we are not offering that nut for sale as we have an insufficient supply to do so. But I had some fresh on hand that we harvested the same day as the others and thought I would share with your gang. Looks like Rudy approved! :):):)

As for your "Chickens", given time I think they will screw up the courage to investigate the Palm Nuts. If not, you tell them that I will have to send up the Caique Brigade from here who will whip them into shape!!! :D:D The Caiques here are HUGE connoisseurs of Palm Nuts of every variety. I call them our "Mikeys".....they'll eat anything!

Thank you so much for the big ol' grin on my face tonight.:hehe:

 at your flying nut!
I used a rubber mallet ..... few gentle taps on the nut between the folds of a kitchen towel.

When I lived in Az I had a date palm in the back yard. WE would tie cheesecloth over the bunch to prevent the birds from eating the date....yes, they are wonderful especially freshly picked.

Ha, I thought Red Bellies were supposed to be phobic birds - apparently NOT!!!

I was on holiday once in Mexico and picked some Palm Nuts for the Macaws that were kept at the hotel. They did'nt touch the nuts so I thought maybe they were the wrong kind.
Or maybe they just didn't recognize them as good food.

I loved the pics of your birds
That wooded box/nest for your Grey looked very inviting.

I just got some today too!! I just put in a small order with Kathie to try them out with Lola... hopefully she will react a little more like Rudy :p
LOVED this one and also the "chicken" one! Too cute! My guys look at me like I'm crazy when I give them the palm nuts. Those are the first things that get thrown out of the bowls!

Love the pics!!

Enki and Ayeko are the complete opposites of J & C .. no fear of ANYTHING!! They are crazy, stupid brave, esp. if I put anything in or towards my mouth, if they think it might be food, they attack me to get it. They are much like Rudy, they'll try anything!!
