Hi, I am new to Avain Avenue. :hello: I am also a new Macaw owner! :harlequin:
So look forward to learning many things and appreciate the support here!

My Macaw is ( I am told ) 13 years old. He just started stepping up to my arm!! Was so exciting. He starting to talk to me as well! I've been trying to spend so much time with him, for a smooth transition.
I of course, have LOTS of questions.
But, I will take it slow. I am just so excited to have PoPeye as our family addition!

His cage is in our bedroom. Our bedroom is quite large....almost 1,000 square feet. So works out well.
Although wondered if, there are any effects from bird dander to my husband and I? I seemed to have a bit of a cough since we brought him home. But, could totally be a coincidence! I love him there, because we can spend a lot of time together. It is almost like a mini apartment inside our warehouse style home! So, its the warmest, coziest spot with couch, chairs, TV etc...

He is not ready to come with me to Shower, so tried to 'spray' him. Went okay, but he likes to 'walk away', so I never get all of him. I have done just a light spray to make it a positive experience.
I could try on his perch, but I don't know, if he will feel 'trapped'.

Anyway, Hello again and great to be here!

If Popeye is going to sleep and live in your bedroom with you, the very first thing you need to do is invest in a good air purifier. Macaws have less dander than many other birds, but they also have some dander. Regular showers will also help.

Welcome to AA and we love pictures.

Welcome to you and PoPeye! :)

Showering can be traumatic, especially if a bird wasn't exposed to them very much. Make sure he sees you "shower" when you mist him....let him see that you enjoy it, and it will not harm him in any way.
As has been said, invest in a good air purifier...we have three of them running here, because Milton and the tiels are dusty, dusty, birds.

Also, we'd love to see pics...:)

Welcome! We would love to see pictures and hear stories. Although it might be messy, have you thought of maybe having a shallow dish of water where he could take his own baths in?

My blue/gold macaw likes the shower..but doesnt like me misting him. He has a very large stainless steel bowl (made for dogs) that he actually gets in and bathes. Makes a total mess, but he likes it. I put some towels around the cage when he gets to bathin.

Big Mama was disciplined with a spray bottle by her previous owner so she's afraid she's in trouble when I mist her. I always let her see Kindred and Morticus getting misted and how much they enjoy it then i'll mist her a little. I don't force it on her. I put a big container of water on top of her cage and gets in and splashes while the other two are getting misted.
