Still dont know if sammy is a boy. Less than one year old. He sings mayberry song, wolf whistles, says pretty bird, and show me what ya got. Along with beautiful songs. All signs of male, except not a bright cheekpatch and still barring on the tail. Ive tried posting pics. Any help?

How old is your bird? Male pieds can retain barring on their tales for several years and through several molts. I think you have a boy on your hands. He's a cutie.

Thank you all. Sammy is my little cuddle bug. He loves to be touched and gives kisses also. Male or female, he is very, very smart. I love this little guy.

Odds are very high, almost 100%, that he's a male with what you've described and the fact that he's a pied. The "boys have brighter cheeks and no tail barring" adage is only true of grey bodied cockatiels, once pies get thrown, the norm gets thrown out. I believe this can also be the case with lutinos. It's much more about behavior than appearance, from my experience.

Not only that, but he sounds like a huge sweetie! What a lovely repertoire of sounds he can make at just under a year
