I woke this morning and checked on the flock. Sunshine's cage was covered in flight feathers! Poor, poor girl! I don't know if she got stuck on a toy, was frightened by something, or what? She was very quiet and did not rush to her food bowl. I took her out and she was her normal talkative self. She lifted her wings and ALL her flights are gone! She was such a wonderful flyer. It makes me sad for her. :(
I checked all the feathers and none are chewed. I think she may have dropped them due to fright. We sleep with a fan on in the bed room so I would not have heard her. I feel terrible. I know they will grow back but I still feel bad for her because she loves to fly. She spent the morning riding around on my shoulder.
Here are the feathers:

I don't know if you remember but Sammy did this once before too. He had his foot caught on a toy. When I rescued him and held him close his tail feathers and a few flights fell out.
That is odd, and sad :(

Elvis lost his tail feathers due to stress from going to his well check at the vet and it
has taken him 8 months to grow them out...I really hope Sunshine's dont take that long.

Maybe she is just trying to expediate her molt? Hope those pretty feathers grow back fast, it's easy to get chunky when you can't fly :(

I wonder what evolutionary purpose this serves? In the wild a lizard will lose his tail so he can get away. Maybe the shedding outside feathers releases the bird from the predator, but how, at that point without flights, can it get away?
