Setups for medium/large birds
1~ What kind of birds do you have and how many birds did you design your setup for?
Amazons.
Not really a design, more like a fumbled assembly (remember my name on here?)
2~ Is your setup for a handicapped bird?
No.
3~ Are there any budgeting tips you discovered while doing your setup?
Craigslist (make sure to disinfect..... and it doesn't hurt to do that twice!). Raffles. Keep your eyes open to see how others do things. For instance, I have ladders I bought to fasten onto MC playstand to expand it. Awesome wooden ladders, picture to come in a week or so when it's back up. Saw this at a friend's house that belongs to our bird club.
4~ Is your setup changeable or stationary and do you add or make changes continually or do things stay primarily as is?
Things stay primarily as they are. That's my bad. Except for moving the parrot's around on these awesome little perches I bought at our annual Gateway Club Hook bill Fair, ridiculously cheap, under $10 each.
5~ Where did you find your materials if you made it yourself or where did you purchase the setup and do you have favorite places to purchase safe toys and/or supplies that you find reliable?
Cages were bought on craigslist. Travel cages came from a local pet store (Varietees). My pak-o-bird came from a raffle. The wingdow came from an excellent lady on here (thanks Aleta) and MC has one that I won courtesy of @SandraK
Toys? Our vendors rock. IGAW perches are getting smaller and so is Kingpin from OG. The huge skewer was from Parrots Treasure. Don't know if they carry them any more.
Secret's playstand came from my first sidewalk sale. I don't see her now as a vendor though. I clicked a minute or so after it started to get it. Good choice, she still flies down occasionally despite the clip.
6~ Do you have a favorite item that you bought for your setup?
My wingdow, hands down. The large one I bought the straps for, they can stay attached on the large, and it can be moved to sit on a dining chair so Secret can be at the dinner table. Trust me, a mad amazon ON the table wouldn't be fun.
7~ If you made any DIY toys what is your bird(s) favorite and were there any failures?
Avian Antics wafers (MC) and the Ziggy wafers from mother plucking bird toys (Secret). Multiple failures until someone posted the video on how to tie knots.
8~ Did you incorporate into your setup any foraging toys and how did your bird(s) take to them and was age or inactivity a factor?
Not really. They have toys in a bowl, does that count? I've put food in there before but they ignored it. MC prefers to eat that cockatoo mute button from parrots treasure
9~ What difficulties did you encounter, if any, and how did you remedy them?
Oh boy. ......
We got these two in dirty tiny cages. One cage came with a bird in it, the other bird I put in
The cage didn't lock so we wrapped bungee cords around it. MC was thrilled to move so he didn't eat the bungee cords.
Cage hunting was hard.
We began with this one for Secret because we were told she was the nice tame bird. ...notice no feed doors??? Is really a portable but we have no instructions on how to take it apart and put it together.
After the bird tried eating me, we went and found
One home I went to the cage wasn't big enough but there, in the corner, stood a playstand. I asked if she wanted to sell it. It belonged to a neighbor but they were just laid off from their job so I came home with that! Hubby used his power washer and off we went cleaning again.
MC enjoys this and threatens hubby occasionally as he walks by.
10~ What do you like least about your set up (if anything)?
No dislikes actually.
11~ What do you like most about your set up?
They're part of the family this way. Our house is open between the kitchen and living room. Parrot to the right
And parrot on the left
On the bottom of Secrets cage is a tray. It's from Home Depot. They use them for washing machines to catch water. It also catches bird food flung out.
12~ Did your bird(s) take to the setup right away or did they approach it tentatively needing time to adjust and do you feel their age was a factor?
Secret had issues with her cage being open in the back so we moved her against a wall on the other side.
They're amazons, maybe that's why they are okay?
13~ Any future renovations planned?
Dreaming about better travel cages when King's mediums come out, stainless steel cages, etc.
