I have a 6 month old macaw and his feathers are looking rough! Any help or recommendations? Is it poor diet, stress?

Yup! Baby likes to play hard. 
Your sweetie is young and having fun. All that rough play is hard on feathers. When my guys were babies I used to say they looked like they were run over with a lawnmower.... TWICE.
Your cutie has a lifetime to look beautiful. Right now let him play is that's what he wants. Make sure he has a nice well rounded diet of pellets and fresh foods. When he molts he will be beautiful.

It's macaw baby play. They are rough on their feathers. Just wait until he breaks off his tail feathers. They look like this for a good 2 years, then eventually they learn not to be so rough on their feathers & tail.
