I realised yesterday morning that my lovebird is bleeding from it's front 2 toes and back one toe on it's left foot. It was pretty bad as there was blood all over the cage floor and she couldn't stand on that left foot. I soon discovered that a thin rope/string has somehow tied itself pretty tightly on the left foot of her and may have caused her to bite her own toenails off, and lost a lot of blood. In Singapore there really isn't an avain Veternerian and I really hope I can help her.

Just checked her today, after cleaning her up yesterday, she is able to stand on that left foot but can't really grip tightly. She also lost some blood through the night, but significantly lesser than yesterday. Also, since yesterday the region where the left foot was tied is kinda swollen.

Get rid of whatever produced the string she got caught in. It's very fortunate she didn't bleed out or hang herself. Keep a close eye on her and whether or not the wounds are still bleeding. It might be worth lowering her perches and giving her something fleecy on the bottom in case she falls. Can you post a picture of the foot? Did you do anything to try and stop the bleeding at all?

Google showed a few different avian vet specialists in Singapore. I am also going to ask someone else I know there to see where she takes her lovebirds.

From the person I know in Singapore:

"Hi! I usually take my birds to see selena (zebby's feather). Lots of my friends bring their birds to dr hsu at The Animal Clinic or Dr Tong at AAVC =)"

So, a few options for you.

in film canister I keep 1 tablespoon of either cornstarch or plain white flour and 1 tablespoon cayenne powder. cap the canister tightly, and shake until well blended. I use it both dry and wet; dry version is a thumb and 3 finger pinch onto the bleeding spot and press in pinch firmly for 2 to 3 minutes. it the pressure of that pinch that helps to stop bleeding. Wet version: 3 finger pinch and put that into your palm and few droplets of water and stir into thick paste, pinch that paste firmly on to bleeding nail, hold it for 2 minutes.

Yeah, I cleaned her foot and feathers and beak which had quite a bit of blood and the bleeding seemed to have stopped so far, I checked on her every now and then. Also I removed the toy that was causing this. I'll put pictures up when I get home later (cause it's Monday here) but now her front 2 toes have little of no nail left and has a dark color on the front tip of the toes. Today, her grip strength has improved slightly since yesterday
