Last year I was desperate for information because I thought I was going to lose my greenwing that I have had for 17 years ( I don't know his age) to a liposarcoma on the underside of wing near his body over an artery.. My vet did not want to take off his wing and all my research showed that chemotherapy was not a good choice.
We were lucky and found an animal cancer treatment Center nearby where the radiologist had studied chickens in medical school and also had macaws of his own. he told us that Ruby would have to endure four radiation treatments with no side effects other than to lose some feathers ( which didn't even happen). The wound at the excision site finally quickly healed and over a year later he remains in good health. The doctor promised me that he would have no recurrence for at least 3 or 4 years. He knew it hadn't spread even though it was fast growing.
The hardest part of the treatment was stuffing him into a way small clear box prior to anesthesia (see photo ). I thought I could get away with it once, but as he was an abused bird I have been working with him for years on trust and I guess it paid off.
Please feel free to share this post wherever it may help. The treatment center is in ft. Lauderdale, Fl
