That's a great looking tank. I think I need to get a bigger one for my two because it seems I'm constantly cleaning it.

Is sand difficult to keep clean in a goldfish tank?

I always love your updates! They so much smaller in that big tank!!

IME, sand is much easier to maintain in an aquarium. All the gross stuff sits on top and you just have to vacuum the top few layers gently.

Yes, the gasses. That's why you either keep Malaysian Trumpet Snails or poke around the sand every few weeks! :)

Ok, this is Instant Tahitian moon sand.{you want the instant only, since we already have fish in our tanks} It is not really sand. It is fine gravel, that looks like sand. It is supposed to not blow around like sand, and be easy to skim waste off the top. It is bright black. Let me go get a video for you..it's super nice. Also, if you have high flow, or keep only a thin layer, you won't have a problem with anaerobic pockets developing. Also move any decor while cleaning, and do not use decor with holes in the bottom.

I have Silica sand (not really sand, it's made of silica) and I recommend it for freshwater tanks. :)

I would not recommend silica sand for a goldfish tank. Goldfish tend to ingest some substrate, at least a little. Silica=glass
It basically boils down to the shape of the sand. If you were to magnify the silica sand, you would see it has very sharp edges. On the other side of the spectrum, a nice oolitic sand is completely round.

Your tank looks awesome and your fish are gorgeous. It is going to look amazing with the black sand - the fish will really pop!! I can't wait to see!

Thank you Kacy! I am probably only going to use part of what I bought. My friend ordered it for me through her saltwater shop. I wanted 5 bags, but was able to get 6 since they come 2 to a case, for just a couple dollars more. Since you generally remove a little with water changes, it will give me extra to put back when needed. I am going to pick it up today or tomorrow.:)
