Took my sweet Blackjack to the vet today for a thorough exam. I am heartbroken and happy at the same time. He is healthy overall, but we reviewed the x-rays from before his surgery and they are heartbreaking. He was walking around for a good while with the tip of the elbow jpint snapped completely off, several other breaks in the femur, and the femur shoved downward an inch or two behind the tib/fib bones. There is obvious new bone trying to grow around this mess, which indicates he was suffering for quite awhile with it. I wanted to cry from that alone, but then...........
He has some white, pimple looking spots on his face and ears that I asked her to look at. I was hoping it was some kind of doggie acne from all the stress he had been through with surgery, kennel, fostering, new home and whatever else. She decided to aspirate a couple to make sure it was not an infection of some sort, but she suspected he may have been SHOT in the face with buckshot, rocksalt, or sand!! She looked at it herself and was unable to determine and is sending it off for a cytology specialist to look at it. She did say that she saw several nuclei per cell where there should be only a single nucleus. This could be cells attacking a foreign body, but the cytologist would be able to determine if it was cancer or from being shot. I almost lost my composure at that point! My poor baby!!
He is just an absolute sweetheart! I cannot fathom how anyone could be so cruel and heartless as to shoot a dog in the face or leave him to live with a broken leg for so long! He cuddles with me on the floor and lays his head on my shoulder when he is tired. So happy to have a ton of toys, people to love, and room in the yard to run. There has not been a single accident in the house and only 1 time have we had to tell him "no" when he pulled a corn cob out of the trash. And SMART! Already knows his new name and has learned sit and lay down. He has anxiety issues when it comes to cars, but we will work on that slowly.
Other than that, he is healthy and we will just wait for the cytology results. He got treats and love from everyone at the clinic. They oohed and aahed and kissed and hugged him to his hearts content! I was afraid he wouldn't want to come home with me!
