I saw him on my neighbors roof while photographing the sunset. I would say a pretty neat looking bird. We are in southern California if that helps with ID. I really have little knowledge on raptors, but I don't think I have ever seen one like this around before. Agreed, red shouldered. I had to look at a range map though and was surprised to see them in California. I usually think of them as an eastern bird.
