Howdy from Texas..

Hello everyone -

Stumbled on this site, and figured it was a nice site since I have a growing fid family. Two years ago - we were adopted by an Illiger Macaw and a Quaker. So those two have been our family clown in our household for the last year. So this past weekend, we ended up adding a new fid to our fid clan - a U2 Cockatoo. When we got the Macaw and Quaker, we got them both as babies. So my wife and I said if we ever got another bird we would look into older birds and rehome birds (adopt) because there are so many out there that need a good home or a second chance instead of picking up a baby. So we just happened to come across the U2 and that bird literally picked us. The owner was surprised how he just came to me and just sat on my arm. So which was a good thing, so we brought him home over the weekend and he is now part of the family. I know out of my three birds the U2 is going to be my most challenging bird -

Welcome to Avian Avenue. Be sure to check out the section on Cockatoos. You have picked great birds for your flock! It was a good thing you did by choosing an older U2. Cockatoos are wonderful birds, but you are right, they are challenging. Cockatoos are the birds that people surrender the most. Make sure from the beginning that you are training him, rather than the other way around!

Thank you everyone! Senorabarb agreed - after we got our first two parrots which were babies, and after I look around and I see people posting giving up their birds - so we decided our next bird would be an adoption. So this way we can give a bird a second chance. We pretty much live in a zoo of a house! 3 Parrots, 2 Goldens (Dogs) and 1 Cat and 1 Corn Snake. LOL! (Not to mention 3 kids - well one is off to college this fall) And so far we are happy with the direction we went. He has been a pure clown and amazing - the darn bird thinks he is human. I don't let him get out of his cage on his own I make sure I give him permission (just as I do with my other two parrots). Because its my rules or the highway. (Hopefully I can keep it that way but Im sure there will be times he will want to be the dominate one)
