Hello everyone. First time on this forum and would like to let you know a little about myself and my wife. We have owned two parrots previously - a Nanday conure (for 24 yrs) and a blue-head pionus (20 yrs). Unfortunately, our pionus passed away recently and we are in the process of buying a black-head caique. I say in the process, since we are having our bathroom and basement remodeled, and we didn't want to bring a new bird into that commotion to add to the stress of being brought into a new environment. He has been hand-raised and is now 11 months old. The breeder likes to have her new babies (after weaning) get used to being around people and being handled, so the owner will be getting a bird that is used to being handled. With no experience with a caique, could you suggest a good book (or books) on the care and feeding of a caique? Thank you in advance for your assistance, and we are looking forward to talking and sharing experiences with all of you.

Welcome to AA. Sorry about the recent loss of your Pionus and also the loss of your Nanday. There are many Caique owners here so hopefully they will check out this thread and offer you some advice. Was going to suggest that you post in Caique Cul de Sac but see that you have already done that.

Hi Skip, there are no books that i know of that are 'real' about caiques. In fact that's true of most species, that's why I have started writing some of the books myself.....anyway you're better off reading everything on this forum and others about them.
I have a pionus, also 2 caiques (and others) and I remodeled my master bath and kitchen over the past 6 months with birds and dogs in the house.:faint: Very hard but our crew was great (many of them own birds) and everyone worked together to be sure the birds stayed safe.

Communicating with a caique is so different from communication with a Pionus! I feel like I had to start over from scratch. I have a baby caique that is 3 months old. This is Captain Jack Sparrow:

Hi Skip,

Welcome. I am owned by a flock of caiques. Six birds and every year we raise a few babies. It is far from complete but you may find it helpful. I'll message you with the link.

My biggest recommendation is to be well versed in no-force, positive reinforcement handling skills and training. It doesn't have to be formal but if you keep your interactions positive then you will have the best success. Caiques never give in or relent so bribery is your best friend :) Mine are all absolutely lovely (for parrots anyways). They may not be everyones cup of tea but they are wonderful to me :) They need to be themselves and will demand it so you sometimes have to get creative to get what you want.

You'll learn lots here!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Avenue! Sorry about the loss of your Pi. A new cake sounds fantastic, great little funny and active birds. Can't wait to see pictures.
