Hi, my rainbow lorikeet is named Bongo, and I have had him for 3 months now, and he is 2 1/2 years old. He says a few words and is generally a happy chappy. He seems to have been a lil off colour these last 24 hours...but quite happy when he comes out and sits on my shoulder. He regurgitated over me this morning, and I read in a thread that this means he has chosen me as his mate. But I wonder is it mating season?

Welcome, welcome!

Congratulations on your little one! A quick question... Did he gently throw up on you with gentle head bobbing or with lots of head shaking/flinging? The two types of regurgitation mean different things. :)

Do you have a good avian vet? That is, a vet that specializes in birds? That's super important because a bird is so very different and most dog/cat vets don't have much bird experience... Experience that can be a matter of life and death if something unexpected happens.

This is a great site with lots of helpful folk. So glad you found us!

As above was it violent or did he try and feed you what he brought up. Flicked around is vomit and lories are very susceptible to yeast and bacterial infections due to their specialised diet and high maintenance requirements for hygiene.

Welcome by the way and where are you?

Lorikeets in particular can breed all year round so with these horrors there is really no specific season, they can be hormonal all year round sadly! So it's hard work sometimes to keep them out of the zone.

Our red Lory doesn't seem to suffer from hormones as much but our scalies and rainbow are definitely in quite obvious hormonal episodes.

Welcome! There are multiple factors that effect when a bird's hormonal season is. Two of the biggest factors are which hemisphere that you are located in, and the hours of light that your bird experiences in a day.
