So I thought this grass we have was spinifex grass but after double checking I’ve discovered it is not.
The budgies love it more than millet and I have been giving them a few strands each day, they eat the tiny seeds and also chew up the stems.
I’ve used a plant app to identify the plant for me but each time I take a pic of it for the app I get a different result. It’s told me that it’s chinese pennisetum and also true sedges (Carex). It’s given some other names too but these are the main ones I keep getting. EDDD8D57-EC5B-49EA-94C6-A9946FCE3532.jpeg

This is a pic of a few bits I picked today.

Does anyone know what this actually is?

@Shezbug I have no hope with Australian plants, let alone grasses!
sounds like first you have to get it down to: is it a sedge or a grass?
I'm sure it will be true there the little phrase I say here out in the wetlands:

"sedges have edges and rushes are round, grasses have knees that bend to the ground"

The knees of grasses are joint-like nodes found along round hollow stems.
The stems of sedges and rushes are solid;
in cross-section the stems of rushes are round, while those of sedges are triangular and hence have edges.

I just found this website with some pics of the fruit/seeds and some other nice pics that might explain things better and help you.
Sedges Have Edges . . . (Grasses, Sedges & Rushes)
their poem is a bit different, but still makes me want to get out there this growing season....I'm just touching every plant I go past.
