Hi a friend of mine is thinking of getting a hahns macaw and was just wondering what they are like regards noise... I know they are not as loud as the bigger macaws. Are they much noisier than a grey? Or would thay be as loud as a cockatoo... Also what are their personalities like?

Mini-Macaws have a reputation for being nippy. And they /are/ loud, they're still macaws, after all. That said, I personally feel Cockatoos are far louder than a macaw. Especially the bigger ones.

Hahn's are not quiet birds by any means, but yes, Liz is right that they're not as loud as a large mac or cockatoo. They're a bit more similar to a conure, with a touch more mac volume than most conures but not as high-pitched. The Hahn's alarm call is loud and piercing for most ordinary people. Greys might produce a more constant chatter or stream of sound, whereas a Hahn's would be more likely to call out more at certain times of the day. They are chatty, though, and once they learn to say a few words, they like to sit around and practice them. :)

Hahn's are smart and need a lot of enrichment. They're also active birds and need a lot of out-time. They can be prone to plucking and depression if they get bored, and they tend to be beaky and nippy (their little beaks are very pointy and sharp). A decent-sized cage (21"x32"), lots of enrichment, quality training with positive reinforcement, and a close bond with an owner are pretty much necessities. They're not birds you can just leave alone all day and expect them to be fine. When I'm gone all day, I can usually walk into my house and hear my Hahn's calling from their room "Come back! come back!" They're not super clear talkers, but once you're used to them, you can tell most of what they're saying.

There are many threads here on the avenue about Hahn's, if you use the search function. We have several members who live with them. And if you have further questions, we'll try to answer.

The only time my little Oliver is quiet is when he's sleeping. He isn't as loud as my other mac's but he know how to get them started. Rocko our grey is the quietest peep in the house, so I would have to say yes Hahn's are louder than Greys. I will tell you that Hahns are spectacular little guys that will give you hours of entertainment and lots of love.

Mia's going to be 4 this fall. She's a bit of a spit fire now that hormones are in gear. Somedays I can handle her without a problem. Some days she'll pinch and twist with vengeance. She's funny. Sweet. When she's in a good mood she's an awesome cuddler. She loves attention. She is picky with her favorite toys and food. She likes long discussions about the same things over and over. She isn't loud, my Illigers is louder as is the Blue Crown. But she does like to sound off.
She can be a lit stubborn, so if there's something she doesn't want to do- good luck!!

Her talking ability is insane. She's so smart, it's almost scary!!
