"You hear about dogs guarding a house, but never a parrot!" exclaimed Sr. Const. Bob Neelin. He was commenting on the account of a burglar fleeing a home in nearby Hudson, Ont.
Anne Ayotte and family returned to find furniture pushed around, a chair toppled, blood on the carpet, a bloody handprint on the kitchen floor and their parrot "Amiga",
owned by 15- year-old daughter Melissa, sitting triumphantly atop his overturned cage.
A neighbour reported that a man had run pecked, scratched and screaming from the house waving his hands over his head. From what the family can piece together, the man had made the mistake of going to the cage. Amiga bit him, causing the man to knock over the cage, which gave the 18- year-old Amazon parrot his freedom. The territorial bird then attacked the intruder, who is thought to have grabbed a blanket to put over his head while he crawled to the door to escape the fierce attack.
"When we got home and saw the mess, we figured someone had hurt our pet. Little did we know it was the other way around," said Ayotte.
