I got my parakeet Skittles 2 years ago and never knew that I needed a vet, and now I think he is sick and can't find any good vets in the area that actually take care of birds. (Dogs and Cats are huge in my area). What should I look for in a good vet

Where do you live?

For me, I found my avian vet by asking other pet owners about who they had and then asking those offices about who they would recommend for avian specialist. See also this article re finding an avian vet Choosing an Avian Vet

Birds usually hide their illnesses very well so if you suspect your parakeet is sick, I would take Skittles in right away.

You can do a search here:

Not all the vets listed are avian certified vets but they do have experience with birds. However it's always good to ask how many birds that treat weekly or monthly.
If they tell you just a few then keep looking. If you tell us your approximate location maybe someone can recommend a vet.
Hope all will be well.

I'm in AR and chose an AV in LA that was recommended by my local LDAV. When she decided that she wanted to retire, she introduced another AV. Usually, vets know the certifications of other vets.
Something else to consider is bird ownership. Nobody reads another bird like a bird owner!

Call a couple local vets and ask for a recommendation for an avian vet. Then you have some names and can start to research education and reviews etc.

I'm in SW AR and the only AVs listed are near UA-Fayetteville or Little Rock. My birds go to an AV in LA that was recommended by a retiring AV in LA that was recommended by my local LDAV. Vets usually know the certifications and clientele of other vets.
