Feeding doves once a day?

I heard about a woman who kept ringneck doves in an aviary and fed them what they could eat once a day. I was wondering what everyone's opinion on this is? I was led to believe they should have access to food whenever they like? (Please don't criticize me for this question...)

I let Grumio have access to food all the time. I have also heard of people feeding them once a day and unless there is more evidence saying its a good idea I wouldn't do it.
