Hello! I’m trying to find an answer for this: why when F1 Harles get bred with F1 Harles, do the chicks (F2 Harlequins) get brown feathers, look sickly/ill, and most die around 10-13 weeks of age but it doesn’t happen to F2 Catalina’s or F2 Rubys. This has always confused me. Thanks!

F1 = first generation hybrid (for ex, Catalina aka Bng x Scarlet)
F2 = second generation hybrid (for ex, Camelot aka Catalina x Scarlet)
And so on

NO I do not support the breeding of hybrids, but I am interested in genetics and learning about hybrids and mutations. Thanks!

Thank you for tagging me, @April , but this is out of my realm of knowledge. I know about them and the issues, but not the reasons behind them.

The best person to ask is Cynthia Johnson... which it looks like she responded to you already in the Hybrid & Mutation Macaw group on FB. Here's the response from her.
