Thanks for everyones concerns and support :hug8:

Also happy too hear im not crazy for thinking surgery after only 2 weeks of treatment is ludacris.
Tonight it is still no better, im feeling very defeated and desperate to find someone to see her.
Ive been trying to search for specialists within my city without much luck. The university is meant to have one so I've sent them an email just now about appointments. I think the cortisone is the only thing keeping her sane. I dont like giving it too her though :( she gets all the side effects. ..thirsty, ravenous like a wolf, pees constantly, more hair shed...but it's the only way she stops itching her ear and can sleep *sigh*

Fingers crossed about the specialist. I just dont want to have to try ten vets to get her happy and healthy so this is the way to go.

all the treatments reccomended in this thread, including the link I posted, ive now found are illegal/almost unobtainable here :( gentian violet included

Casey your post got me thinking(sometimes a dangerous thing  ) but years ago an Akita breeder had a dog that had reoccurring ear infections. After years of traditional treatments she found that using Messengill Stinker as a weekly wash kept the dog infection free. She gradually extended the time to once a month.

I got to thinking that if that worked to keep reoccurring infections at bay, why not Monistat as a treatment for a dog yeast infection.........went looking and found this!

Dog Ear Infection Treatment with Vinegar

Follow On:

A dog ear infection can cause a lot of discomfort in your pet and can also lead to complications if left untreated. The dog will experience extreme itchiness and the condition may evolve, being able to perforate the ear drum and cause deafness. If you notice an ear infection in your dog, you can apply some at home remedies. Vinegar or acetic acid can be effective in treating ear infections.
Dog Ear Infections
The most frequent dog ear infections are yeast infections. However, dogs may also have bacterial infections or ear mites.
The vinegar is an efficient remedy, as it will change the pH of the ear and will eliminate the bacteria and reduce the overgrowth of the yeast cells.
Vinegar for Dog Ear Infection
You can apply vinegar in your pet’s ear and this will be able to eliminate the infection. However, before applying vinegar you have to make sure that the dog’s ear drum is not affected. Applying vinegar in the dog’s ear when the ear drum is perforated may cause serious damage to the ear and even deafness.
If the ear canal is completely shut, you will need to consult the vet, as you cannot administer home remedies. Surgery may be required.
If the ear drum is not affected and the ear canal is open, you can safely administer vinegar.
You will need white vinegar or apple cider vinegar and a few vitamin C tablets (human vitamin C is suitable). The vinegar will normalize the ear’s pH and should eliminate the infection; ear mites will also be eliminated, as the acetic acid from the vinegar will kill them.
How to Administer the Vinegar for Ear Infections
Follow a few easy steps to administer vinegar for the ear infection:
1. First, you will have to trim the dog’s hair from the ear area, so that you can administer treatment more easily. Use a pair of clippers or scissors. If the hair is removed, the air will be access to the ear and this will facilitate the healing.
2. Dilute the vinegar. Never use pure vinegar; use 1 part vinegar, 1 part water.
3. You can apply the diluted vinegar using a syringe or a dropper. A syringe may be more efficient, as you will need to administer at least 100 ml of solution, not just a few drops. Pouring the vinegar may cause the vinegar to enter the dog’s eyes, which can cause irritation.
Hold the syringe close to the ear and administer the solution; you don’t need to introduce the syringe in the dog’s ear canal, as this may hurt the ear drum. Even if only one ear is affected by the infection, you should administer the vinegar solution in both ears of the dog.
4. After administering the diluted vinegar, allow the dog to shake his head. Then get a clean towel and clean the ear area.
In addition to this treatment, you can administer vitamin C to your pet. Vitamin C can reduce inflammation, which is common in canine ear infections.
Consult your vet if you suspect that the ear drum may be perforated or if the ear canal is shut.

Thanks, T!
I just bought the Australian version after confusing myself 100 times over!
Had to get it via express mail so likely wont have it until Monday (sometimes they do saturday deliveries if youre lucky). So hopefully the combination drops and cortisone will keep her calm til then!

I sure hope it helps, thanks so much :hug8:

I have had great success using Grape Seed Extract to eradicate yeast in ears in the past. Just a few drops and massage into the ear twice a day. We do everything as naturally as possible. Other than a Rabies vax every 3 years, which is required by law, we only give one set of vaccines as puppies and after that do titers to confirm immunity. I feed a prey model raw diet, use essential oils for flea/tick/heartworm control.

The whole Dog Journal, which you linked to is an excellent source of information and you will find many effective natural solutions to a host of issues.

Hugs to Ava

Gonna have to marry you Theresa!

Only two treatments of Daktarin (aussie monistat) and almost all the discharge is gone! It looks amazing!
By "almost all" I mean all externally visible stuff but I assume theres still some in there. Wil keep this up for a week or so then as needed!

Hubby might have issues with your plan ;) :hehe:

Yay! I am so happy it's working! Did you mix it up like it said in the link or did you do it straight?

I dont think the last photos did any justice to just HOW swollen, red and irritated, and full of thick moroon brown discharge right through the ear. It was worse than it looked.

Heres today! A nice pale healthy pink on the outside.
Still you can of course see a bit of the yeast infection, but it is WORLDS better in only 3 days and 4 treatments! That is AMAZING! Since it had been getting treated for three weeks prior with the vet meds with no difference made except the cortisone removing most of the swelling.
Ive stopped the cortisone too so all this healthy lookin skin is thanks to the Aussie Monistat (Daktarin)!
looks like it will be gone within the week! :D
Thanks so much, T! :hug8:

She also isnt itching anymore! Before if I was even a little bit late with the cortisone pill she would itch it silly...not anymore! Doesnt touch it!
