I'm sorry about you loosing your friend. I lost Nerd bird over 3 years ago after 31 years and I still miss him but I'm glad I was there to hold him till he passed and it sounds like you had a similar situation. He knew he was safe and loved and with you so just hang in there and take the time you need.
My boss told me years ago he's burried pets harder then some people he's known
