Eastern Collared dove. An invasive non-native species. On the Game and Fish department list removal from the environment (that's a nice way of saying that they don't belong here, and they are destroying the native doves populations and the powers that be have designated them for 365 days a year hunting until they are all gone).

New bird to the feeder this morning.

White-winged Dove...

We are, apparently, right on the northern edge of their summer breeding territory.

Biannual camping trip this weekend. Saw a few species of birds that I've never seen in the area we caped in this weekend (and we camp there twice a year.

For instance, we've watched red-tailed hawks raising families on the cliffs for years. This year they had competition in the form of at least one pair of Zone-Tailed hawks. I was sitting on a rock by the marshy end of the creek and had one land on the bank just downriver from me.

I also got a photo (a little blurry) of a Bridled Titmouse, which I've never seen down there before.

One of the other guys and me also saw a Sora, a small species of rail, but I couldn't get a picture. And a had a very large heron fly upriver past me (first one I've seen out there), but couldn't react fast enough to get a shot of it.

Here's a goldfinch, but I'm not sure which variety.

On the non-bird side of things, Canyon tree frogs have returned to the area since the big flood cleared the trash out of the area.

and Ornate Tree lizards were all over the place.

I live right almost in the center of the Northeastern Flyway. We are seeing more and more warmer weather birds around here and have noticed over the last five years we are collecting a lot more families of Turkey Buzzards and Black Vultures, usually only seen 200 miles south of us. There are big changes afoot with new colonies of birds where they never lived before.

From the ground, a flying Zone-tailed hawk looks like a vulture. The only real difference in appearance is a white stripe running across the underside of the tail.

Bird pics from this morning, while eating breakfast out on the back patio (Broccoli - cheese omelets/ bacon/ coffee). Two new species, but not very good pics of either. Now that I know they're there, I can watch for better opportunities. Maybe set up my blind again.

First the two new birds...

A Black-headed Grosbeak...

and a Wilson's Warbler...

Then a passel of the usual suspects...

female English sparrow...

female House Finch...

Male House Finch...

Eastern Collared doves...

papa House Finch feeding a juvenile...

WOW, a truly awe-inspiring thread! Amazing natural photography and the birds are simply spectacular. I guess I missed a lot of great threads when I went on my hiatus last year. I love all the shots and the GHO is my favorite. You're so fortunate to have such a wide variety of species to capture in photographs. Very inspirational, Dan. :cool10:
