Celebirdy for the Month of September 2012, Carlos
Here is what Pat had to say about her gorgeous baby, Carlos.
I purchased Carlos from a local pet store, not something I would ever do again. I helped hand feed him and brought my own food in once he started to explore veggies and solid foods and visited him a few times a week until he was ready to come home.
2. What is your bird’s name, age and sex?
Carlos will be 11 this November. He is not DNA sexed as a male, but have always thought of "him" as a "he"
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
No, Carlos doesn’t really do any tricks, except avoid getting in his cage when it is time to go night night.
4. What are some of your bird’s favorite foods?
Let's see, he loves sweet potatoes, apples, occasional grapes and LOVES scrambled eggs!
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
Carlos makes me laugh everyday but I think the funniest thing he does on a regular basis is if our dogs are barking outside, he yells their names and makes the clicker sound!
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Oh, Carlos has enriched my life in so many ways. He has given me unconditional love, taught me patience, makes me laugh at the end of a long day. He has deepened my love for all animals and feel that owning parrots is what further deepened interest in being a voice for animals of all kinds. He has also deepened my spiritual side of life.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
I would tell them that owning a Grey is a lot of work, just like any other parrot but what you get back in return is an amazing companion. I would also tell them to nurture their relationship as they are very intelligent birds that do need interaction with you a lot. I also feel it is important to leave them fully flighted for their coordination and self-confidence.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Carlos really isn’t a loud bird for the most part. He has him moments when he can get the flock going with their secret language they have, but most of his vocalizations are words and I love to listen to him talk!
9. What are some of your bird’s quirks?
Hmm, not sure if I can think of any quirks other than he likes to perch on the outside of his food station and drop food to the dogs when his cage door is open.
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
Wow, this is a tough one because he says so many things! I guess what surprises me is when he uses words in context. If I happen to take a nap in the bird room and I wake up and he sees my eyes open, he says "Hi honey" or when I uncover him in the morning and he says "Hiiiiiiii, whatcha do?" it just melts my heart.
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
He loves the Carob covered almonds in Kathie's Bountiful Harvest blend!
