Welcome to the neighborhood!
It is with great pleasure that I announce the Celebirdy for the month of September.........The beautiful Nani!
Here is what Leslie (birdlady) had to say about her gorgeous baby.
1. How did you aquire your bird?
One day before Christmas, six years ago this December, my niece and I stopped by a new bird store to buy Christmas presents for our birds...and there she was on the floor. She must have fallen out of her bin. I picked her up, we snuggled, and that was it! I called John and asked him if I could get her and he said yes. For nearly three months we visited her every single day until she was weaned and we could take her home.
2. What is your birds name, species, age and sex?
Nani (Hawaiian for beautiful and pretty), a female Moluccan cockatoo, will be 6 years old on September 20th.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
She plays basketball...I toss her a ball and she runs and puts it in the hoop! She also loves to play catch!
4. What are some of your birds favorite foods?
Nani loves cheese (I call it cheesey wheezy)...she only gets a little tiny bit, but goes crazy for it! She also loves sweet potato, peas, and her yogurt cup!
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
Nani loves loves loves my son Cory, though he wants nothing to do with her. Whenever he comes home, she is trying to peek to sneak a look at him. It is sooo cute! Well, one day she was hanging out on the sofa and he came in. She started trying to show off, running and hopping and yelling while looking at him. Well she must have misjudged her hop, as she landed straight BEHIND the sofa onto the floor! I scooped her up and if ever there was a look of total embarassement, that is what I saw on her face! It was soooo funny, but I also felt sorry for her! lol
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
I can't even begin to explain how much joy and pleasure and love she brings me. She is sooo human like in her mannerisms and personality. I just love her so much. The unconditional love and sheer joy she gives is so rewarding! I could never imagine my life without her.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
Please do the research and realize how much time and what a huge commitment owning a cockatoo is. This bird is not for everyone. She can go from sweet and cuddly to loud and crazy in the blink of an eye. She is a mega destroyer of things, so you have to be on your toes and always provide her with safe things to chew on. Cockatoos need a huge cage...Nani's cage is 8 ft across and 3 ft deep. She has playstands in nearly everyroom of the house. Actually the whole third floor is set up for her enjoyment! Oh, they can get super loud...I mean loud! lol
But if you are ready for a lifetime committment to a bird like this, the rewards outnumber the sacrifices.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Crazy active one minute, quiet and content the next. Nani is able to entertain herself very well in and out of her cage...we worked at this to make things easier on us and with our schedules. She gets super loud and crazy about twice a day, and is pretty quiet and content all other times, whether sitting on the sofa with me, in her aviary, on her playgym or in her cage.
9. What are some of your birds quirks?
She notices anything new, I mean anything! Nothing gets by her. Once she notices that new thing, I have to take the time to show her that it is ok and now a part of our house. After that, she is fine!
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
Nani is not a big talker, but she does say Hi, Hello, Wheeeee!!!, I love you, and peek a boo. Everything is said in the cutest little girlie voice!
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Cheese! lol
