Welcome to the neighborhood!
Please join me and congratulate Waterfaller1's Hawkhead Cochise! He has been chosen as Celebirdy for the month of December.
1. How did you acquire your bird?
I found an ad on Kijiji. The price was irresistible, and it was just before my 50th birthday in April of this year. {a good reason to want another bird, right?}After speaking to the owner, I knew I had to save him, no matter what it took.It turned out my intuition was correct. He was living in deplorable conditions. I was saddened, and appalled.
2. What is your birds name, species, age and sex?
Cochise, Buff Crowned Hawk-Headed Parrot~Deroptyus Accipitrinus Accipitrinus, I was told by his previous owner that he was sexed as a male & is six years old. There have been questions brought up as to his age though. He does not show the typical golden eyes of an adult Hawk-head.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
He hangs upside down from one foot with the greatest of ease.
4. What are some of your birds favorite foods?
Fruit & veggies. He loves to 'soak' his fruit in his water, then eat it. He is really good about eating some things some of my other birds won't touch, like pears, raw carrots & snap peas.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
While watching videos of his buddy Cassius, he leaped over the pc monitor in one single bound.
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
He has reminded me how important it is to stay calm & be patient. We are working through his fears, and he is doing wonderful! He is also a little lovable sweetie.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
They are wonderful! They can be shy of new things, and new people. They need a very large cage to spite their small size.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
He is very active,{why they need a LARGE cage} loves to play and rip up different types/textures of toys. He has many different calls, one is a very high pitched continuous call. I call it 'the banshee call'.I would compare it to the level of a Conure, but not as constant.
9. What are some of your birds quirks?
Mumbling while eating, dunking his food into his water, hanging upside down. He is very fast on those two little feet. He also does this little wing flit thing. Where he moves his body back and forth very fast, while flitting his wings against his sides.
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
Cochise does not say many words,he mostly just repeats "huh?" over and over. He will flit his head very quickly as I speak, like he is listening intently. But, he knows just about every whistle you can name. Wolf whistle, come here whistle, yoo hoo whistle..to name a few.
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Cochise is my best fruit and veggie eater. He gets pretty mesmerized by 1/2 grapes. I just love him!
