So I was just curious about the lack of black on my lovebirds beak. He was just weaned, his DOB is 5-5-13. And everywhere I've read says that the more black on the beak, the younger the bird. The breeder I got him from was awesome, and has been breeding for over 20 yrs, so I don't think she was lying. But do you think its possible hes older than what she said? Either way its fine because hes a love and its not a big deal I'm just really curious. She also had a very light pied lovebird who she said was a little older than the other babies but still with no black at all, and the sibling to my baby had much more black but had been weaned around the same time as my little guy. Does this make sense? Thanks in advance!

Some mutations I think do not have as black of a beak? Do you have a photo?

The more black on the beak, the younger the bird. It will eventually all go away.

So how old does he look then? I mean she looked up his info and his leg band and had his birthday and parents and everything written down.

Makes it sound like they lose the black beak BY 6 months of age, but some lose it before 3 months old. And some mutations do not get the black beak at all, no matter the age.

I think Piper had most of his black gone by the time he hit 5 months of age.

My little guy was about 5 months old when I brought him home recently and I had similar questions.

Maybe it's a white faced lovebird thing?

It looks like some may have less black than others I looked at similar color mutations and some had less black as babies so I think its possible that it varies from baby to baby. So my baby could still be around 8 weeks. And Cyreen your little guy is so cute! It looks like ours could have almost been from the same clutch lol.

We'll have to compare pictures as they age. I'm curious to see how Ren's coloring changes as he ages.

Yeah we will Cyreen! Im curious what my Corbin will turn into. The breeder said he will have a peach band across his forehead, which would look really pretty. And thank you Katster! I love love love your cockatoo by the way! I would love to have one some day but they always seem really intimidating, with the noise and neediness you hear about, so I don't know if I'd ever be ready for one! They are so cute though! My grandma had a goffin named Taffy and I loved that bird. He was so sweet and cuddly.

Is it possible for a baby lovebird to keep the black on its beak into adulthood?
