Interesting about the cockatoo and their tools. @sunnysmom you might want to read that one because it's a Coffins cockatoo.

Amazing. I'm currently reading the book "The Genius of Birds" by Jennifer Ackerman and thus far Goffin's 'too's as well as African Greys have been discuss for tool creation and usuage and mimicry/language. She points out that what birds are doing with tool use and their complex social networks was previously thought to be unique to primates and apes.

I'm enjoying it so far. Most people who share their lives with parrots know how smart their birds are, but it's eye opening to see scientific studies confirm it.

Very interesting. I've been saying for weeks that Elvis is a genius. LOL. He studies how I do things. You can just see his mind churning...........

@BirdGuy21 Yes, the social chapter was very good. Chapter 6 on Bowerbirds was very interesting too, as was the navigation chapter. I just have a few pages left, and all in all I found this a very informative book. I didn't like how some of the scientists mentioned did their experiments on birds because sometimes they seemed a little inhumane, but this is nothing against the author. I've always known birds were smart, but this book has me looking at my backyard birds in a whole new light.

I also enjoyed the chapter on New Caledonian Crow (and Goffin 'too's) tool usuage. What really stuck out to me was the regional differences between the crows and how they make and utilize their tools. Ackerman points out how this is indicative of what we would call culture, which is pretty neat to think about.
