Anna and me

Hello
Thanks for the welcome.
I am the brand new owner (5 months) of a white cockatoo named Anna. I live on the island of St Maarten.
I have known Anna for a a long time as she was a resident of a local zoo I volunteered for. We think she is about 25-30 years old
After Hurricane Irma, the zoo was destroyed but Anna was OK. They brought her to me since I have a large uninhabited outdoor aviary.
So I actually inherited Anna.
Anna is a very sweet bird. She and I are great friends.
But, on man, is she noisy. I think my neighbors are going to kill me.
I look forward to learning a lot on this forum.

Thanks everyone! Yes, I am glad we were able to rescue Anna. She is really a nice bird.
But how can I get her to stop screaming so much?
Unfortunately the St Maarten Zoo will not be reopening. We were able to get most of the animals there relocated to the Curacao Zoo. We had a lot of macaws and parrots relocated there. Some of the smaller animals like ducks and water fowl were relocated to a nature park on the island.

Also Barbara Heidenreich has info and webinars on the topic.

What does Anna believe she is getting as a reward for her screaming? Do you run out to her, or yell to quiet her?
Is there a certain time of day she screams more? You could try giving food or a toy just before so she's distracted.
Toos really need a LOT to do to keep them busy and quieter (they'll never be a quiet bird).
Some birds can be trained and reinforced to make a substitute sound instead of screams.

Anna is in an outdoor aviary so she hears lots of noises. She used to be relatively quiet during the day though but lately has started screaming a lot during the day. There is no real set time to it, but it seems to be around mid day. she is usually quiet in early morning. I try to ignore her then so she does not think she is getting a reward for her behavior. Sometimes I have to cry out to her and say Anna, no, and she stops for awhile. I think she hears my voice too or see me when I am in the kitchen which is close to her aviary. and everything is open air so the sound easily carries.
and she has started squawking when the telephone rings too LOL
She s in a large aviary with lots of toys.
I was wondering whether a shade cloth over the front of the aviary would help. It would not stop the sounds but she would not see movement in the house.
I will browse this forum some more for some answers.
