He pretty much is. Unlike house flies, bee flies eat nectar and pollinate flowers. Having bee flies around is a good thing. They do all the work of bees without being aggressive or stinging.

you make a good point, but I have to laugh - I am thinking you have never met a horse fly (they bite and will chase you to get you and are BIG)

And bear no relation to the bee fly. Different critter completely. Horseflies bite. Bee flies don't.
