Hi there, I have a 9 week old blue and gold macaw. Have only had him for 2 days but he is constantly honking when we are in sight. He is feeding well, he can finish 80cc of formula and immediately after start honking and head bobbing like he is begging and this can go on for over an hour until we are out of sight.

my question is, does he know he is full? Can I top him up?
is it normal to constantly be begging when in sight of human even when full?

I have only even had experience hand reading Eclectus’s. This is my first macaw and he didn’t come from a breeder so he cannot be retuned to be weaned by the breeder.

The begging can also be a comfort thing. When in the nest, they would have siblings and/or a parent around and wouldn't be alone.

Give your baby some loving after his feed and see if the honking stops.
Begging for food is also kinda how they beg for your attention and affection so your baby may be asking for attention and physical comfort.

What does your sweetie weigh? That would tell you if he is getting enough food. At nine weeks they are usually on 3 feedings a day. Are you making formula like directed on the package? Too thin is no nutrition, too thick can cause infections. Too cold can cause infections and too hot can cause crop burn.
