My Opie is still in his collar because I took it off of him too early. He re-opened his sore :( Lesson Learned.

I'm wondering about something like this Zymox spray for him to help with healing. According to the description, it helps soothe the irritation of the spot, and it is non-toxic if licked by the bird. Do any of you have experience with this or its ingredients?

I am going to check with my vet, too.

Edited to add: This Zymox spray seems a bit hit or miss with one owner reporting their Lovebird got very sick using it. So, that's a no go.

If anyone has any ideas of a topical something I can use to soothe the spot and help it heal, I welcome them!

Have you ever tried Silver Sulfadine(sp) cream? It's what Nala was prescribed for her bumblefoot and we use it at work a lot for helping wounds heal. I'd definitely check with your vet first as I don't know if it's appropriate for parrot open wounds of that degree but I definitely swear by it for how it helped Nala with her bumblefoot sores.

Same as April I used to use SS cream when caring for Coco ( mutilating umbrella ) from my old job.

I don't envy you with this battle. I should know this but what collars are you using? Do you use any "step down" type collars? Coco could wear those little hoodies when close to healing but not quite. I also had NUMEROUS sizes and styles of collars to allow the least restriction depending on the severity of his self inflicted damage.

I also love the Silver Sulfadiazine cream. Used it for one of the birds after a foot injury and now I make sure to have it always on hand as part of my "kit".
It does indeed make things heal faster (sometimes the Qtip excess makes its way to a skin crack on my fingers).

Disclaimer: I’ve never dealt with mutilating or plucking birds.

This is one situation I would happily advocate for the use of aloe- it’s extremely moisturising and gentle too- the gel is non toxic and totally edible so no worries if birds ingest it.

@Shezbug what sort of aloe do you get? Does it come in a spray form or do you buy a liquid aloe of some sort to use?

I grow my own Aloe Vera and always have since I was a youngster. Have it planted in pots and everywhere in my yard usually. I sometimes just use the thick gel but I’ve also had times where I’ve turned the gel innards to a more liquid consistency. It’s all we use for burns, bites, skin issues etc.
I’ve tried numerous available aloe products over the years and I don’t find any of them as nice or easy (or as helpful) to use as just cutting a leaf straight from my plant- I find the purchased gels to be either horribly sticky or be mixed with things that I’m not happy putting on my skin. I’m sure with some internet searching you’ll find some with very little else in it but as far as I know no one sells it without some type of additives (been years since I looked so sorry if I’m wrong with my outdated knowledge)

It’s seriously so easy to grow and is useful for so many things, if you choose to buy a plant make sure it’s the correct aloe for medicinal uses as there are a heap of aloes.

I've been given Silver Sulfadiazine cream for Opie's wound. Of course he isn't happy to have me catch him to put it on, but so be it. How did you keep your birds from licking or eating it @April ?

In Nala's case,I held her on her back about 10 mins to let it soak in. But she would lay on her back on in my hand on her own so it was easy. In Opie's case you may have to hold him in a towel until it soaks in enough. I hope this will help him heal,it worked fantastic for Nala.

I was waiting for Opie to come out of his cage this morning because it is easier to catch him on top of his cage. But he chose to stay inside. I eventually had to catch him to change his collar (yesterday's was just not fitting well) and apply the cream. After I applied to cream, I rocked him like a baby and sang him his song "Once Upon a Dream" from the old animated Disney movie Sleeping Beauty--all while petting his head gently.

He started making happy noises and his eyes started flashing! Who knew!? After a few verses and made up lyrics, the medicine had absorbed and I turned him loose on top of his cage :)

Yeah, getting him to let me put the collar and medicine on him requires catching him in a big, fluffy, fleece blanket. He's not amused, but he did like it when I sang to him, lol!

Well, today was a circus! Opie saw me coming with the blanket and he flew off the top of the cage to the floor to escape. I had to drop the blanket on him to catch him. Hopefully only 2 or 3 more days will be sufficient to have the wound healed enough to let it heal the rest of the way on its own (but still with collar on).

Yikes he really does put you through the ringer for things. He's so lucky to have you.

We have had circuses here too. I always find myself wondering which one of us is the clown.
Do you think the silver sulfdiazine is speeding the healing?
