Yes! I only give it to her cooked cause somehow I can't get them to sprout...

Thanks everyone for your knowledge!!! :')
If they’re not sprouting then they are likely old and no longer packed with nutrients unless you’re doing something wrong which is hard to do.
How are you trying to sprout them? Like what is your process for sprouting?

Do you have links for this information? I’ve never heard this before and I’m interested in finding out more.
I don't have a link to anything, so I might be wrong, but I read that raw rice was dangerous, and based off of how much quinoa expands, I assumed that quinoa would be the same. Sorry for posting wrong information if I am wrong.

Edit: I was wrong :(

After looking it up, both can be safely eaten, and the raw rice danger is just a myth, :oops2:

All good.
I’m genuinely curious as the only thing I’ve heard about raw quinoa is that it should be washed before feeding or you need to buy prewashed to use raw.
I’ve also read somewhere ages back that the rice thing is not actually factual.
It is not the best choice of foods for birds to eat though especially the white grains.
It’s so frustrating and hard to tell what’s true and what’s old wives tales or poor information sometimes with bird care.

I do think birds generally enjoy grains cooked, and since Pellets are so dry I do prefer to offer them cooked for the added moisture. :)

Oh that could be the case!

I tried twice with the same packet of quinoa. I soaked it for 30 mins and then started the rinsing and draining process making sure the seeds aren't sitting in water. I may have soaked it for longer, I can't remember.

I have a new packet of tri colour quinoa. If I can sprout those, would be great cause I hate cooking it! :roflmao:

For the initial soak I do 8 to 12 hours, then drain and rinse twice a day for 2 to 4 days :)

Ah okay! I shall try that and see how it goes. Regarding quinoa... Preeno seems to have expensive taste and picks out the black quinoas :shifty: or maybe it just looks more eye catching/seed-like

Can I say something? Prenno is adorable!!!!!! Did I already say that? Oh well
I know that many members here feed their birds zupreem. I think @Kiwi's Mom feeds it to her two budgies, in fact! Personally, I feed Kaytee, but am planning to switch to zupreem and harrison's mix. I am also quite sure that Kiwi and Blizzard have never gotten sick from eating their pellets, sooooo
I actually just switched from Kaytee to Zupreem because I found bugs in my Kaytee pellets. They probably weren’t from the pellets themselves, but the only place I found them was in the Tupperware bowl where the pellets were so... better safe than sorry

Do you feed your bird fresh corn?

Reason I asked is I lost my heart budgie several years ago. He was on every treatment known to my AV for 3 months. He still wasted and lost weight. Eventually he was euthanized. I did extensive study to find the reason, even contacting breeder who tested his parents for yeast but it was negative.
I grew suspicious of fresh corn. Long story short stopped feeding anything with corn and there were no more incidences of AGY in my budgies.

Sorry what is AGY?

It's unsure whether her symptoms are caused by yeast. I've come to the end of her extra meds (Nystatin) and she's still well and hyper, but coughs at least once a day. Gonna get in touch with the vet to give her an update and see what's next :(

So my vet just got in touch with me to say that she suspects the 'coughs' are behavioural because Preeno is doing well. She doesn't want to do any further treatments/tests for now until there's signs that it's a real 'cough'. She advised to just monitor her behaviour for now and see if there's any environmental factors.

I'm gonna stick with her current diet for now since the pellets shouldn't be an issue. Thanks everyone for your help!

Corn is very high in sugar, so if you do feed it I would only do so in small amounts.

This may be a bit off topic but do you guys know if eating seeds can irritate the crop and cause the regurgitation behaviour? or even pellet crumbs.

I read somewhere that for small birds sometimes they do choke a bit on the hulls. Just wondering if this could be the case for Preeno.
