Hi all,
We have 2 bonded lovebirds 11 years old. We noticed one day ago the female having a yellowish roundish bulge towards her bottom area. We took her to the emergency vet they did an ultrasound and the ER vet on staff said he thought it might be a xanthoma or it could be peritonitis. Have any of you seen this yellow bulge on a lovebird? Pls see pics thanks

Poor baby! Did the vet give you an idea of what the suggested course of action would be?

The vet that was on staff was not an avian vet. If it is a xanthoma they said that would be a diet change if it's the egg yolk peritonitis it would be either surgery or some sort of flushing. We are bringing her back tomorrow to get looked at an actual avian vet for next steps.

Uh, if the vet suspected peritonitis, they should have done bloodwork and/or started antibiotics immediately. Did that happen?
The vet on staff at night was not avian specialist. He thought it was a xanthoma fatty tissue but to confirm it we are seeing an avian vet tmmrw

Good, you absolutely need a second opinion. If it's peritonitis, that is an emergency. Does she have any other symptoms?
She doesn't really seem ill but does have more tail bobbing. She's drinking and eating gas energy. We initially thought egg bound but the ultrasound ruled that out. The ER vet thought it was most likely a xanthoma.

I agree that peritonitis would probably have her sicker by now. Fingers crossed that it's not that.
