Does anyone know what this would imply?

The macaw at the petstore has parts of her beak that kind of look discolored.

I'm sorry. I don't even know how to describe it but it doesn't look nice and black and shiny.:(

I have a feeling that this must be from her diet.

Even though pellets are offered, she picks and chooses what she eats.

I'd need to see a picture, but if you're seeing actual gray or whitish discoloration, that's probably because she's hasn't got enough fats and vitamin A in her diet. Macaw beaks can get dry and whitish and flaky looking spots on them if they don't have proper nutrition.

Of course, if what you're referring to is just streaks of lighter "horn" color, then it's probably just because the bird is young. Minis have lighter beaks when they are younger that turn black and shiny as they get older.

The beak could simply be flaking which is totally normal. It is growing continually, like their nails are.
A lack of calcium can be a factor.
With a healthier diet and some good quality nuts, those symptoms (beak discoloration) would improve greatly, if lack of calcium was an issue.

Obviously, she will see your vet.
