THIS IS NOT MEANT TO REPLACE VET CARE

What type of bird is this and what do I do?

 It seems to have hit one of the windows with a bang and then landed on my balcony minutes ago. I have no clue of what to do in this situation or even how to physically handle a bird from the outdoors. What can I feed it? Seems to be a baby, I think. What do people do in these situations? The vet office is closed right otherwise I'd be on the phone with them. Seems to be a baby bird and it is definitely alive. Right now it's out there in a box with my OH. How safe would it be for my parrots if I were to bring this bird inside? Or would it be best to just care for it from outside?

The same thing happened to me years ago....it had hit the window...I put it in a box and brought it inside. Before too long it perked up and started flying around the house crashing into things. Not that the same thing will happen to you but I would take it outside anyway. Good luck!

In one of Linda John´s books she wrote that she would place the bird in a box and leave it some water in a shallow dish and put the box in a dark room for a day. If it recovers, it´s usually ok the following day and can be released.

Thanks guys. Makes me a bit nervous. I think I will keep it covered in the box until I drive to the vet office in about 30 minutes and let them deal with taking care of it. I will pay for the vet care. I just don't have any knowledge dealing with stuff like this. He banged and bounced around once or twice on the balcony before landing that way.

Saemma I have had similar experiences. I place them in a box, where they fell. I leave them outside. They usually just need time to recover from the impact. A few times after giving them time to recover I have picked them up and placed them into a tree or bush to get them perching again. I only handle them with thin plastic gloves on, for fear of lice.

Usually they just need some time to recover, as others have said.

My vet is connected with a wildlife rehab in the area, so any little critters can be dropped off and they will see they get the care they need. They ask for a donation, but don't expect payment. Maybe your vet will have a similar arrangement. I've taken a couple of birds in over the years.

Poor thing...it looks like the female Gold Finches we have here in WV. They're all over my cone flowers right now eating the seeds. Kathie

Its a beautiful bird! Goldfinch sounds right, Kathie... I'm working on my *wild* bird ID skills, having moved somewhere rural where I see all manner of birds. I agree that usually they can recover in a box until they're ready and they'll usually fly away once they've un-dazed themselves. If you're really worried I believe some places have local wildlife rehab specialists you can call? I've called them before when I found an abandoned nest of squirrel babies...

THis is a little green finch. I also recommend keeping him in a dark box with some water in a shallow dish. Most will come around pretty well. If he does not come around well contact a wildlife rehabber. Some vets will not treat wildlife and will even euthanize.

I wouldn't take it to the vet. As other have said leave it in a dark box with water or fruit. And leave it alone for an hour or two.

Its crucial it be left alone so it can recover. If you mess with her/bother her, she can die from not only from the shock but stress from you. Best to leave her alone.

If she recovers, release her so her parents can care for her.

Yes, it's a finch.

Just be careful as far as bringing it indoors because of mites. Almost every time I have to handle a wild bird I see some mites on my hands and arms after. Every time I pick up a large nest that has blown out of a tree, the nest is FILLED with them. I will use a big stick now to pierce and carry it.

I wonder if mites are regional or more common in more dry areas? In WA, I only ever saw mites on a sick bird. Never any healthy fledgling or adult wild bird that came into my care.

There is a wild bird sanctuary here, not sure if there is one near you. I agree that you should leave it outside. I have had the mite experience too from a bird's nest at the cottage. They were just big enough to barely see a speck moving on our skin and we were all itchy.

Could be regional. I wouldn't normally call Ohio dry though :hehe: Like most of the eastern 1/3 of the US it is humid and rainy. Not like where you are, but definitely more so than a lot of areas.

It's definitely an adult, and most likely a female. Some sort of finch, not a goldfinch, as females have white stripe across their wing coverts, I can't figure out what kind of finch it is. It probably has a concussion, so (like others have said) put it in a dark box with shallow water, and don't try to keep it warm, as I've heard warmth and concussions can be fatal. Check on it a few hours later.
