He gets this patch of colored “beak” that looks like his beak previously flaked off and food got under it. It’s red when he eats strawberries and yellow when he eats his pellets. Is this bad?
background info: 10 months old, male, hand fed, diet is Zupreem natural but I am switching him to Rowdybush.

It looks like a split in the beak from dead skin that makes a sort of pocket that food gets caught in, but maybe not... How long has it been there?

The beak is an ever growing part of the bird; it will shed the outer layers as the ones under it mature. You're just seeing the outer layer start to slough off :)

It's part of the reason that chewing toys is so good for them!

Birds beaks grow from the inside to the outside- the older layers chip and peel away over time. Sometimes Burt’s beak is a right mess with flaking old bits... I usually help him with them bu picking them off.
It’s normal for your bird to have little chips and flakes from time to time.
