Hey y'all! So over the past few months, Genji has been making a noise i'm not used to hearing from him. It almost sounds like the angry sort of noise a chicken would make, I don't know how else to describe it, almost like a squeak? or a whine?

At first it was just every so often, usually when he was sitting on my shoulder preening my hair or begging for food, so I assumed it was a wanting noise or an affectionate noise. He could change the tempo and volume at will.

This week he got sick with a bacterial infection :( Since then, he seems to make this noise whenever he's uncomfortable or in distress maybe? Like when I put him in his travel cage to go to the vet, and he makes it really loudly and quickly when you try to grab him + once you actually grab him. He'll continue making it afterwards too. Interestingly enough, he doesn't really make it when he plays or flies around. He made this noise at the avian vet yesterday and she didn't really comment on it at all, just that he sounded upset, and in her full check-over said he was breathing fine and other than the secondary infection, nothing seemed wrong with him.

She gave him antibiotics and while he's so hard to catch and he hates being grabbed, I've given him a few doses. Normally he stops making the sound after 10-30 minutes. But tonight, after a particularly frustrating attempt to catch him, he's just making it a lot more. He's in bed now and has been for over an hour, and now he's almost entirely silent, save the occasionally beak grind sound or little half-squeak. When i lifted the blanket just to check on him, he made the noise loudly at me again.

because he only occasionally does a little one while covered, and it gets loud and frequent when I uncover him + its not with every breath, I don't know if it's a respiratory issue... does anyone else's budgie make this noise?

Mine don’t really sound like that. Sorry I can’t help!

Sounds like purring and growling. One of my budgies purrs when I talk to him and growls if someone comes too close when he's on his nighttime perch.

I'm hoping that's what it is! He mostly does it when he's upset or uncomfortable/in pain right now (recovering from an infection) so it's likely something like that. I was worried it was a respiratory issue at first, but our vet cleared him of that thankfully!
