Reaffirming that Amazons are completely inconsistent, Pesto gave up on okra a few months ago, after eating it initially would not touch it, would not even tear it up.

But I bought some and offered it when she flew into the kitchen begging food (usually something like scrambled eggs) and suddenly it was the most wonderful thing ever.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring, unfortunately I had to buy a package of 30 or so....

I am starting to realize some of it is contextual. The stand in the kitchen is the "where I beg human food". I suspect if I put the okra in her cage she might have ignored it. Though I don't want to assume I am smarter than an Amazon, going down that path will lead to severe disappointment.

I thought id give jalapeños a try with my Conures seeing they love other types of non hot peppers. As i was cutting them up my eyes were burning similar to how an onion would. Then i got to thinking, i know jalapeños arent hot to birds but i wonder if they burn their eyes like it does me especially if they were to get juice in their eye. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I decided not to give it to them.

Hmm I never thought about this! He lovess jalapenos, serranos and habanero.. I think if it would irritate him he wouldn't eat it, but I remember when I added red pepper flakes to his chop once he started sneezing... so I'm not sure if every bird reacts the same. I thought the general consensus is it's okay to give

One thing I must say though.. avoid them after hot peppers!!!!!!!!! One time he gave me a kiss near my eye and holy heck did it sting

Well, to some of us jalapenos are not considered actually hot. :wideyed:

But both now and when I had a Macaw and Amazon about 30 years ago I fed them all sorts of hot peppers. My current amazon likes habaneros better than jalapenos (by ratings about 10-30x as hot). I've never seen any indication of issues, no scratching or rubbing, no reluctance to chow down and sling bits and pieces everywhere.

I don't know the mechanism by which people's eyes water, and whether birds have that mechanism, but experience says they like peppers and aren't bothered by them.

PS. You'll see lots of ways to avoid crying while cutting, but my favorite is fill a sink deep with water, and do the slicing under the water. I've done that when cutting up a lot of peppers for salsa or chili. The slices will just float up (usually up, worst case fish off the bottom). All the aerosolized oil that tears up the eyes stays dissolved in water (do wash your hands thoroughly after and/or wear gloves if touch-sensitive).

PPS. Handle with care yourself, but try picking up a few habaneros. They have thin skin and I do not usually even cut them up, or at most if she doesn't seem interested will cut them in half to show off the seeds. Besides, they are much prettier than jalapenos, and have a better flavor. But... if you are sensitive, be very careful handling to wash your hands thoroughly after touching. Though they are not considered a really hot pepper in the ongoing arms race to see who can grow the worst. But I love them, much more flavor.

I read up on it and they (AI) says that peppers dont burn their eyes but to avoid extreme peppers like ghost peppers.
Its just strange to me how this can be.
Interesting about the pepper flakes.
