BTW The young man who posted the above info was tickled pink that I was sharing it with an avian forum. It was even funnier because I came across it on a pigeon forum Palomacy Help Group which I joined because I now have a rescued homing/racing pigeon in my flock.

Glad you kept the pigeon....

Awesome about the hawk. Guess he looked like a stump from above when he was motionless!

Bird is probably very young and not quite up to speed on what is safe and what isn't yet. We had a family of similar hawks at our old rental and the young would come crashing into the tree where we fed all the birds from looking for lunch. They almost always missed and then sat there is some weird spot looking upset that dinner flew away. I have pictures of them sitting on the roof of my car, branches out in the open, etc. The parents almost never missed and would just swoop in and scoop a bird away without them hardly noticing till it happened them they'd all dive into the tree and stay quiet for a hour or so. One swooped in so close to my sister he rustled her hair with the wind from his wings but I guess he was committed and hungry that day.

I've seen millions of outdoor wild birds and it has only happened once so figure the odds ;)

Our was a Florida Scrub Jay that people were in the habit of feeding.

Also had a Stellers Jay try and steal a tiny personal sized pie in a tin.

Those jays have real personality!

Baby hawks are kind of dumb sometimes. My guess is that this little guys nest was somewhere urban or near people so it watched humans coming and going all the time.
