What animals are in your yard or local region?

The past few days we've been watching the tree in our neighbours backyard that has a nest in it. The magpies and crows are fighting over it like crazy. Hubby thinks the magpies are trying to steal the crows' eggs, but during the early part of the day it's only the magpies that are in or near it. I'm not sure who made the nest but it's causing a lot of fighting.

We have numerous critters in the back yard of the building. Deer, squirrels, blue and gray herons, ducks galore and the odd muskrat as the yard is on a creek that goes into Okonagan lake, and this guy that comes up the creek and likes to go in the back yard foraging for goodies. Don’t know what he finds but he is fairly regular. Usually he comes at night where the security camera catches him but this time it was a tenant that caught the photo from her dining room window.

Thought I would revive this post with a couple of Steve's latest photos from the past week. This spring he's watched a pair of hawks raise a nest of four young. The mother disappeared shortly after one photo he took while the youngsters were still in the nest. You could see she had a problem with one of her eyes. The father worked pretty hard catching food to finish raising the babies and now they are out hunting on their own. The photo with the bird coming straight on ... was actually going down to the ground in front of Steve picking up worms. It's been hot and dry here so I guess the worms are coming to the surface for moisture from the night dew. I had no idea the least bittern was actually the size of a robin. I know he enjoys his days out hunting the birds to photograph. I see him a couple of times a day..

Around here it's mostly squirrels , hedgehogs, rabbits, foxes , and plenty of different birds.

We used to have quite a few bunnies and the past 6 years now we rarely have them. I've had them have their babies in my planter boxes under the windows in the front of my house. I miss seeing them. The neighbors cats come through my yard every day so they ruined my enjoyment for wild birds and rabbits.

I love my lizards. But mostly.... I love them when they are outside! I do get a few inside every year. So far none this year!

Well, there are many from snakes and gators (Florida also has the American Crocodile) lizards and other such critters. Then there are bird with my favorite the wild Quakers that live right out my back door

He gets so invested with birds when they're nesting and worries over the babies. He's gone most days and when he gets home he spends hours upstairs pouring over his photos. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.... I see him a couple times a day.

The wild Zebra finches have moved into the neighbourhood.
Think it is because of the mouse plague on the farms causing lack of food.

Is there a mouse plague that happens every year? I've seen pictures of it a long time ago. Sad they are depleting the natural resources for wildlife. I like the little zebra finches.

Believe me ... He spends hours every day going over his photos after he downloads his cards from the camera. I'm glad he has a worthy hobby. I think of it as him ( as well as all the wildlife photographers ) preserving the beauty of nature that may not be here in the years to come. It would be nice though if he at least asked me to do something once in a while. I need a crafty girlfriend! I can't walk the distance he does. He does stay in good shape!

A face only a mother could love..... Steve has been following the growth of this young vulture. He's graduating from his awkward age.

And then there is my photo.... a tiny sleeping lizard. His body is like an inch long without the tail. I spot these guys in the bushes and trees at night all the time when I'm waiting on a dog to pee...
