Urgent Watery and black droppings with completely undigested seed

My mom’s cockatiel is having strange droppings. They are very watery and black with some clear liquid and completely undigested seeds. I mean the seeds look perfectly clean and untouched, not just grit in the poop. She is behaving totally normal. Her beak isn’t red or watery, and she was alert before we put her in the cage to get some sleep.

I absolutely want to bring her to the vet, but I live in a smaller town. We have a couple vets who take some birds, but none who specialize in them. So I probably can’t get one until sometime tomorrow, and it will also probably require a road trip.

Do any of you have an idea about what might be wrong or what I can do to help the bird until we get to the vet other than offering lots of water and trying to make sure she gets enough sleep?

Sorry if this repeats somebody else’s post or isn’t in the right thread. I just couldn’t find another post where the food was so completely undigested. Thanks for any advice you can give.

@Mizzely might be of some help here.

I’m thinking from all the other birds who have had similar issues in the past you will need help from a vet but in the meantime hopefully some of our members can offer some advice to help you out with supportive care.

Depends on how consistent this has been. If it was a one time poo, then chances are it may be just a bad seed, or something that didn't quite agree with bird.
Doesn't hurt to seek the vets advice anytime you encounter unusual poop. It's usually the first line of defense
In monitoring poo.
Your bird might require some digestive enzymes provided by your vet. Helps greatly in digesting its food.

Yes, how long have the droppings been like that?

I would smear the dark poop and see if it's black or red... Those indicate possible internal bleeding.

These may help:

Make sure that she isn't pooping on seeds.

Still, sounds like a vet visit is in order. Sometimes it does require traveling for a good vet, but sometimes you might get lucky and find a local vet knowledgeable enough to help you out.

If it truly is black, that's blood and you need a vet as soon as possible as this is a true emergency. Severe inflammation of the GI tract, whether from infectious or other causes, could result in both blood in the poop and failure to digest seeds.

Smear the poop and make sure it is black and not dark green. Sometimes dark green really looks like black. Are you sure the seeds passed? How many poops have had seeds in them?

IMHO even just the seeds call for a vet visit sooner rather than later. Maybe can wait till morning with seeds + green or gray poo, if it’s black or red and you haven’t been feeding beets or berries (for example) then get to a vet ASAP. Don’t wait.
