IMG_3756.jpg IMG_3755.jpg IMG_3754.jpg My quaker parrot has recently been having issues. They are missing a ton of feathers from the cloaca area, and poop has been getting stuck. I can't afford an avian vet, so I was wondering if there's anything I could do for them. They seem to be doing reasonably fine, but there have been moments where they would make a sound and fluff up as if they were trying to poop. Is there a way to solve this without the vet? My mom doesn't want us to go to the vet because if we do we will lose all money. Our other bird, green cheek conure, has a perfectly fine but and there's no feathers or anything missing. We have been wiping the quakers butt, and my mom thinks that diaper rash and countertop medication might help while I don't want to risk doing something wrong.

This bird really needs to see a vet. I wouldn't risk using human ointments and things on a bird without a vet okaying it. There are also things that could be happening internally. All the more reason to get to a vet.

UPDATE: I took my bird to see an avian vet. Apparently my bird was not a he like I have thought, but a she. The problem with her is that she is egg- bound. This is her first egg, and she is one year old. I have situated her in a dark place and the vet prescribed me pain killers for her. For the first two dosages, I accidentally was administering 0.5 mg instead of the 0.05mg prescribed. Will she be okay with this? I have since then changed it.

The pain medication was called Gabapentin.

Update: She hasn’t passed the egg tonight. I’m really worried about that because surgery is a thing the vet recommended to me. I’m not sure if I have the funds for that... Any advice?

She needs to get that egg out. Did they recommend trying anything to help her pass it?

If the egg has not come out by now (friday) as per your vets instructions then call him/her. This is very serious and if the vet tells you over the phone to bring your bird to the vet (highly likely), then you will have to find a way to fund it or risk losing your bird forever. Ask the vet if you can work out a payment plan or the likes.
If you try to remove the egg yourself and mess it up, your bird will pay the ultimate price.

Sorry for the grim post, but it really is a serious thing. Glad you got to the vet when this all came about so you knew what was going on, now, you must carry it on.

I´m hoping for the best for you both!

The vet told me to keep her in a dark and quiet enclosed pace, which is what I was doing, and gave her pain meds for it. We were planning to go into surgery today, but the prices are just too high (1,500-2,000 for overnight hospitalization and god knows how much for surgery), and the hospital didn't have an avian vet in today. We decided to switch out the clinic, which will be available tomorrow, and will be able to give her surgery to remove the egg. We are hoping she will survive the night so that we can take her to the clinic tomorrow. We will keep giving her pain medication as well.

5 of my friends are going to try and help chip money in for the surgery

edit: yes i did call the vet on Friday morning and he told me surgery is the best option
