Hello,

I will be bringing home an umbrella cockatoo at the end of month, it will still need to be hand fed twice a day until weaned. I have experience hand feeding and weaning but smaller birds such as Indian Ringnecks. Any recommendations as to what type of syringe I should use for this bird?, I have been trying to look for syringes with a threaded/ screw on tube due to past experiences with other syringes detaching while feeding (scary stuff).Any other tips with the weaning process and your experiences with such bird, formula recommendations, etc. ? I'd like to hear it :)

Thank You!!!

For bigger birds I use the “Miracle O Ring Syringe” with the catheter tip, 60ml size. The tip is part of the syringe and can’t come off. They last forever. I don’t tube feed so I can’t give any advice on that.

I can't wait to see pics of your baby when you get him/her. I hope you will still post here.
I have a female umbrella and she is the sweetest bird. They are so affectionate and comical.

Awww CoJo is so cute .

My U2 is now 25 years old. We got her when she was 7 months old. She was no longer on formula. She was being hand fed moistened weaning sticks. Not even sure they make them anymore, but they were a cylinder shaped pellet, much larger then today's large pellets. Jasmine (my U2) would eat 10 of the weaning sticks 3 times a day, plus she had seed mix in her cage. Once I ran out of weaning sticks I switched to Zupreem Natural pellets & hand fed those to her moistened. She was 10 months old when she finally started eating dry pellets on her own. Around 4-5 months try to offer CoJo pieces of veggies & fruits. Fake eat some so he knows it's safe to eat. Try to get CoJo fully weaned around 10-12 months. Don't rush it, as it will make him better to be abundance weaned.

As much as you want to snuggle, and U2's beg to snuggle, do not do it! No petting below the neck, except for the feet. Start now on training commands, tricks etc. Be consistent with your command words, so as not to confuse him.
