Tiel bites hard only when hand is in cage!

So I'm having quite an interesting issue with my tiel Juniper.

Each and every time I put my hand in her cage, she will peck and hiss and bite me quite hard, even if I'm simply changing out her food or cleaning something out. It's gotten to the point where she has broken skin.

The very odd part about this is that I can use a perch to get her out of her cage without fail every single time. No hissing, no pecking, no biting. She comes out very easily that way, and I can then very easily get her to step up onto my finger, and she turns into an absolute sweetheart. She'll even ask for scritches from time to time!

Today I had a particularly bad experience with her, and she's quite angry at me. I've of course left her alone, and have covered her cage for the night. I've tried things like taking out one of her toys and leaving for a bit, as well as a good stern "no" each time she comes after me.

I don't jerk around when she bites. I just let it happen and hope that it eventually stops. She's a young bird, so I'm thinking this could be a baby bird thing, but I'm not 100% sure. It definitely seems territorial though, and I really want to put a stop to it so I can have a good loving relationship with my tiel.

Many birds don’t like hands in their cage because they think of it as their own safe place. I would just respect her wishes and get her out with a perch. When have to change her food or clean her cage, you can put her on a playstand. It’s great that she’s so sweet to you away from the cage, just build on that.

Our hands look like predators to most birds. Even my macaw needs me to be very slow with my hands in his aviary or he freaks out. No fast hand movements and I talk the whole time explaining what I’m doing. It sometimes just takes time. I’ve found using treats on my hands and waiting for the bird to take them has helped them desensitize to it somewhat.
