Sooo my lone chook went broody recently and after weeks of her trying to hatch a Christmas bauble (bless the silly girl) I felt sorry for her and bought some fertilized eggs and snuck them into her nest while she was eating.

Much to her and my pleasure all six eggs hatched!

The chicks are about 2.5wks old now and getting big fast! They are silver laced Wyandotte.

1day old

2wks (little one with the 'eye makeup' is my fav and the most adventurous)

For the first 1.5 wks they were shut in the chook house with Mumma chook so the cats couldn't go near them as they could just walk through the chicken wire and weren't safe. Now that they are bigger they stay out during the day when I'm home to supervise. Once they are bigger then they'll be 'free range' like mum. My cats are scared of the big chook and won't go near her.

She's a fantastic mother, sooo protective of them :) I sit in there with them and just watch their antics for hours lol. She doesn't mind me going in there but I'm not allowed touch!

Having been chased by a neighbour's chickens I can understand your cats' healthy respect for Mum. :omg: The chicks are cute and Mum does look as if she'd be someone to contend with.:heart::heart::heart::heart:

Yep they're all staying.. Well as long as none turn out to be roosters (not allowed roosters in the suburbs) I plan to keep them all. I have a huge backyard with 1/3 fenced in so they have a huge amount of room and I hate buying cage eggs (never know if the 'free range' are really free range eggs).

I've had to chase my favorite little one back into their area twice this morning as she can still just walk through the wire lol. Few more days and she won't fit any more.
