The black lory (a dream bird)

Hello parrot people!! I’m sure you’ve come across a post like this before but I’m very intrigued about the black lory (not the black capped lory). I have been trying to find one for myself for a few months now with no luck. In my searches I have learned a ton about this species and about lorikeets in general. One common thing I come across in almost every article about them is what “good birds they are” and how they seem to be one of the “friendliest” lorikeets. But if this is the case, why is it so difficult to find them for sale? My first thought was maybe it was because of their dark colorations. Maybe people want bright flamboyant birds. However, everyone that I have ever shown the black lory can’t get over how beautiful they are with their golden eyes and red and yellow tail feathers against their black bodies and head. I think these birds are absolutely striking, so it seems odd that this is a species that we don’t see more of. The same goes for my other dream bird the greater vasa. I’ve heard so many good things but have yet to find myself one. But that’s a bird for another post. I’m not a breeder myself, so maybe it’s a breeding problem. Which brings me to the point of the post. I’m looking for a black lory. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. So far I have come up empty handed in my searches and have even had to beat back a few scammers (be careful out there guys). If anyone knows of some reputable breeders of the black lory or if anyone has any info or firsthand experience with these birds I would love to hear from you. I’m newer to this forum but so far I’ve been welcomed with open arms and it’s nice to see that there are other parrot obsessed people out there. :Blk2: :gvasa2: :vasal:

Are you in the United States? I've never seen one here. Not that there aren't birds out there that I don't know about, LOL. But I wonder if we ever have them here.

Bear in mind that lories and lorikeets have a specialised diet and do notoriously liquid poops, which they are able to squirt out of their cloacas. People who keep them often end up covering the walls in plastic sheeting to protect the walls. Gorgeous birds, but keeping them in a home can be challenging.

I guess I would see if you can figure out if any even got imported to the US. Some species just didn't have enough interest to make it worth while or cost effective and very few or none made it in before import laws were changed.

Yes, I’m in the US in California. I’ve been able to find a few breeders but none with babies yet. The breed further out in the season I believe. They are very few and far between. Most of the people I’ve come across that have them are in Australia or Japan. I even talked to one woman who had one imported from Taiwan and I other from Indonesia. But that sounds like a headache.

Yeah that’s how it seems. Most people I’ve talked to that keep them are in other countries.

Haha I have heard they have some gnarly poos, I even heard about them staining furniture when fed certain berries. But honestly I’m willing to deal with the mess if the trade off is having a beautiful bird with a great personality. Thanks for the heads up!

I've met 2, and both were utterly charming. In fact, I almost pulled the trigger and bought one. A lot of birds with muted colors are unappreciated in American aviculture: Patagonian conures, noble macaws, tucuman amazons, half moon conures, dusky lories, black lories, bee bee parakeets, etc. Here's a few possible resources. None had black lories listed, but they might know of someone who raises them.

Thank you soooooooo much!! I agree with you completely. Every video and every source I have found for these guys has shown them to be a delight. I’m leaving it up to fate at this point wether I find a greater vasa or a black lory first. there are pros and cons to each but I’d be absolutely elated to have either. I’m in love with them both for different reasons. It’s interesting how color is such a strong factor in them bird community. It reminds me of the reptile community except most of the time completely black reptiles are prized for their beauty. Doesn’t seem to be the case for birds. Of course I disagree though. Thanks again for the resources. I’ll keep you guys updated it I find myself a new bird!

What’s wrong with finch farm? I won’t reguardless because they don’t have what I want. But just so I know in the future.
People have reported not getting what they paid for, long waits, etc. I don't know if she still does, but Fran Anderson in MI use to raise black lories.

I use to be obsessed with owning a greater vasa parrot, but they are impossible to find.

I've been on a breeders waiting list for over 3 years, but because of how complicated it is to get a successful hatch it just hasn't happened. It is, what it is.

I've pretty much given up on that hope, but I know and can appreciateyour love for the non traditional and often not recognized colour of bird.

I have a dove and a house sparrow and I find them truly breathtaking and beautiful.

My house sparrow is a wild bird that imprinted on us strongly so he could not be released. Every time he is on me and I get to look at him, I am always overwhelmed by just how amazing the brown, black, white and red colours of his feathers blend so perfectly and shine so brightly. It just takes my breath away.

I've never heard of the black lory, they really are gorgeous and I googled every bird tka mentioned (amazing)

In the end all I wish for an inspiring bird owner is, the decision to own a bird, is the same as the decision to make and raise a child. Its not an easy one (and it shouldn't be easy) but it is a decision that will impact your life and your birds life more than one could ever imagine. The required substantial financial, and emotional commitment, not to mention the non negotiable extra hours daily for cleaning, care, training etc.

Best of luck in your search, and happy thoughts

Ahh okay gotcha. Yeah I saw on their website that some of the wait time for certain species said 6 to 12 months. Which tells me they don’t even have the birds you are paying for. I will try to look up Fran! Thank you so much.

Yess so impossible. The more I look the more discouraged I get. And I’m starting to think the initial cost of the bird is going to be pretty high since it seems they are only getting more and more rare. I would be happy with either bird honestly. I fell in love with both of them. If I happen to have any success I’ll let you know so that way you can someday track down your dream bird too.

i have no children and my partner and I never plan on having any, I’m 27. I think now is a great time for me to adopt a bird with a long term commitment so that way I’ll be there for the entirety of his/her life. Every time I think about the training sessions, outings, and hopefully someday freeflying one of these birds I get so excited. I’m so ready for the journey with a new birdie.

Sparrows are so cute! You’re lucky to have one and I’m sure he’s lucky to have you too. I’m willing to wait until I find a bird that takes my breath away. Hopefully within the year I make some progress. I’ve been put on a couple waiting lists but I’m not sure how far behind I am in line.

Did you ever find a black lory? I had the same obsession and finally brought a baby home yesterday! Already a snuggler!

Those are some cool looking birds! They’d kind of go along with Pesquet’s parrots.
I think the dusky lories are very pretty.
